Is Your Car Eco-friendly?

Choosing an Eco-friendly Car

Ever wondered what effects your car has on the environment? It has been quite common to choose a car based on price, style, comfort, performance, safety, reliability and suitability to one's specific needs. The aspect of choosing a car based on environment-friendliness is a more recent consideration brought about by the people's increasing awareness of the environment damage brought about by automobile use.

A car can be basically considered eco-friendly if it is clean and fuel-efficient which minimizes harm to the environment. While this task is largely dependent on the automakers, choosing a car based on eco-friendliness is a major step anyone can take to send the proper signals to manufacturers. Although the automobile of today are considered much cleaner than previous models, much is still to be done as the pollution it produces remains one of the major causes of environmental damage.

Improvements on design that has made pollution control reliable, more efficient engines, cars lighter and safer and the use of recyclable materials is the reason why cars of today are considered much better that those of the past. There is no question that the future holds much promise but developments in technology can be put to maximum use by automakers in producing "better" vehicles in terms of environmental quality. This ensures sustainability which is essentially serving the needs of today without endangering the ability of future generations to serve theirs.

Driving the Eco-Friendly Way

Buying an eco-friendly car is not the only thing a person can do to help in the existing environmental problem. How one's car is used can determine whether one is helping or simply adding to the problem. The purpose for which any vehicle is used is a major deciding factor.

One should know when it is wise not to use the car and consider other means such as walking or biking. Planning one's trip to accomplish several purposes or sharing rides with family, friends or co-workers will ensure fewer vehicles on the road. One extreme but doable option is to choose a place to stay based on its accessibility to work or school thus reducing the need to drive.

Avoiding "jack rabbit" starts and sudden brakes saves on gas and reduces carbon monoxide emissions. Plan your trips in order to avoid the rush hour and making several short trips. Remove unnecessary load off the vehicle as additional load reduces fuel economy. Driving carefully rather than aggressively can contribute much in drastically reducing pollution rate.

Proper maintenance of one's car should never be neglected. Gasoline fill-ups should not be taken for granted as even if gasoline is handled regularly, it is still a hazardous substance and its fumes are toxic. Parking in the right place like in one's garage or under the shade in summer are sensible ideas.

Taking Responsibility

An eco-friendly car is no longer limited to the natural gas-powered vehicles. Manufacturers who are starting to see an opportunity for a growing market are producing environmentally top scoring gasoline vehicles. Responsibility towards the environment is not a monopoly of anyone. Everyone can do their share specifically on issues regarding the vehicle one uses. If consumers would choose an eco-friendly car, manufacturers would have no choice but to produce such and if by chance one's car is passed on to another, there is an assurance that no major pollutant is yet added to the road.
